If you are a triathlete, this is the biggest local race you look forward to every year. Registration for this olympic distance triathlon opens on December 1 each year and sells out in 5 hours!! The scenic course travels through downtown St. Petersburg waterfront and south St. Pete. Competitors come from over 40 states and 15 countries each year. Local triathletes also get to compete on the same course as the pros. In its 26-year history, St. Anthony’s Triathlon has hosted some of the top champions from around the world, including Simon Lessing, Michellie Jones, Andy Potts, Tim Deboom and Spencer Smith. This year is no exception. Some of the athletes who headlined the 2009 St. Anthony’s Triathlon in the men’s and women’s professional field are 2008 Triathlete Magazine Short-course Athlete of the Year (non-drafting) and former St. Anthony’s Triathlon Champion, Greg Bennett; 2007 and 2008 St. Anthony’s Triathlon Champion and U.S. Olympian, Matt Reed; 2007 Ironman 70.3 World Champion, Andy Potts; 2008 Ironman 70.3 World Champion, Terenzo Bozzone; 2008 U.S. Olympian and past St. Anthony’s ITU World Cup Champion, Laura Bennett; 2008 Ironman 70.3 World Champion, Joanna Zeiger; 2005 and 2006 St. Anthony’s Triathlon Champion, Becky Lavelle; and 2007 Ford Ironman 70.3 World Champion, Mirinda Carfrae.
