Sightseeing on the run....

With millions of runners in the country, it's probably safe to bet that some of them travel at any give day. Here is the typical vacation for a runner... get Running in NYCthere... check into the hotel (still plan on getting a run in later)... walk around and check out the surroundings (hmm... I have done enough walking, plus I don't feel like running and it's almost dinner time)... eat dinner (I am too full to run now, and it is already 8pm, guess I'll get up early and go run in the morning)... go to sleep... the alarm comes on the next day (I should really sleep in when I'm on vacation)... go sightseeing again, and before you know it, you have not even run a mile when you get back on the plane coming home. Well, here is the solution. How about sightseeing while you are running?? That way you don't miss out on either one!! Check out City Running Tours!! This company organizes sightseeing tours in major cities around the country. They are expanding their tours to more locations so bookmark it and check back often.

For those frequent travelers...

Businessmen running

When you travel, do you know where to run? How about locations of nearby lap pools? Is there a YMCA or health club within walking distance? How about places to eat? If you need to buy a sport watch, where are the sporting goods stores? If you travel a lot for business or vacation, this is a website you do not want to miss. Athletic Minded Traveler will answer all the questions you have. It will even pick out a hotel for you based on your criteria. The site allows you to preview San Diego and Toronto for free. More in depth information requires a subscription at a very reasonable rate of $2.95 per month. It is well worth it if you are a frequent traveler.

Stick to your pace!!!

This is one innovative concept!! Have you ever wonder if you are on pace for a certain race distance? This is a pace chart that is a temporary tattoo on the inside of your forearm that helps you stay on pace, hence the name Pacetat. If you are one of those people that can never figure out what time you need to be at mile 4, 6 or 13 to make your goal time, this is one great helping tool.

A running mile = a cycling mile???

Most of us training for triathlons like to cross train and often like to compare which form of exercise is harder or burning more calories? If you cycle and run, you already know that one running mile feels harder than one cycling mile and therefore it will take more than one cycling mile to equate to one running mile. If you compare strictly distances, it is really not a fair comparison since cycling creates more wind resistance than running. A more reliable comparison would be to look at the amount of calories each activity burns. Here is the conversion ratio:

MPH:Calories per mile:Conversion factor
10: 26: 4.2
15: 31: 3.5
20: 38: 2.9
25: 47: 2.3
30: 59: 1.9

How to use the table: For riding 20 miles at 10 miles per hour, divide 20 miles by the conversion factor of 4.2 to get 4.8 miles running. For riding at 20 miles at 20 miles per hour, divide 20 miles distance by 2.9 conversion factor to get 6.9 miles running. For riding 20 miles at 25 miles per hour, divide 20 miles by 2.3 to get 8.7 miles running. For riding 20 miles at 30 miles per hour, divide 20 miles by 1.9 to get 10.5 miles running.
