Running clubs in Tampa Bay

Running by yourself provides you some personal time to unwind the day or to release the stress from a hard day of work. But on a day that you just can't get going, there comes the benefit of having running partners. Training seems less boring when you are running with someone else. There are also track workout groups in the area. Marathon training groups also go into full swing comes marathon training season.

Tampa Bay Runners was founded in the 1980's by two individuals and has grown to having over 200 members. It has runners of all running abilities. The club has a weekday evening run and a weekend morning run and membership is not required to join them for the runs. The club also holds monthly membership meetings with guest speakers often speaking on a variety of topics. It also has monthly socials, holiday parties and a monthly newsletter. Members also receive discounts from local running shops. The club also works a few races on finish line management and timing to give back to the running community. The club also organizes a couple races during the year, one of which is a all women event that is geared towards beginning female runners with a training camp preceding the race.


Tampa Blue Shark Running Team (the Blue Shark)

Commonly known as the Blue Shark in the area, it is a marathon training group officially starting in August and lasting through February when marathon season ends. During peak training months, you can find as many as 80 - 100 runners in the early mornings on Davis Islands and Bayshore putting in their miles. Water and gatorade are provided free of charge. Tampa Progressive Training Team (Progressive)

Progressive Training TeamProgressive Training Team is a weekly track workout training group. The team has runners who are usually eager to compete and improve their times. Members are usually serious runners and triathletes. Three practices are held at the University of Tampa and one in the Clearwater highschool track. The team is coached by former USF cross country standout Dror Vaknin. On request, team coach will provide each runner a personalized running schedule tailored to each runner's individual goal and his/her running ability. Monthly membership is required for weekly workouts.

Take the First Step is a running group that is geared towards beginning runners with a strong emphasis on long-term goals of aerobic fitness. It is founded by an experienced marathoner and RRCA certified coach Lynn Gray. Lynn has been an age group winner for over 20 years and her impressive running resume includes over 35 years of long-distance running and over 70 marathons. The group has guided individuals who aspire to become a jogger or speedwalker and helps motivate them to attain their fitness goals such as completing a 5K, 10K, 1/2 marathon and marathon.  The group offers weekly track workouts for beginners and group runs on the weekends at various Tampa Bay locations.



Brandon Running Association (BRA)

Situated approximately 20 minutes from Tampa, Brandon Running Association has runners of all running abilities. The club has daily group runs during the week and on weekends. It holds monthly membership members, holiday parties and social events. Their signature races are the St. Patrick's Day Shamrock Classic and the Brandon Half Marathon and 5k in December.


Clearwater West Florida "Y" Runners Club

West Florida YClearwater is approximately 20 minutes from Tampa. Started 27 years ago, the club has over 500 members with various running abilities. It has group runs during the week and on weekends as well as organized track workouts. The club organizes the popular annual thanksgiving Turkey Trot and Summer Sunset series 5k at Clearwater beach. These races provide funding for scholarships to pinellas county highschool deserving cross country students. The club also has a monthly newsletter.


St. Petersburg Forerunners Track Club

Forerunners Track ClubSt. Petersburg is approximately 30 minutes from Tampa. This track club is led by the legendary coach Joe Burgasser who is well into his 60's and still winning age group races. He leads a group of runners for weekly track workout at St Pete College track and every other week in South Tampa at Plant High School. There is also a Sunday long run at Demens Landings located at downtown St. Petersburg. Most members are marathon runners. The club's website has a listing of club events posted as well.

The St Pete Road Runners (SPRR) was established in 2006 after a group of 5 women met and discussed the idea for a new running club that would serve southern Pinellas County. The women wanted a club that would be all inclusive; regarding age, race, and ability plus could give back to the community. The mission of the SPRR is to encourage running/walking of all ages and abilities in a social environment while promoting fitness and providing education in the community. The SPRR club is well suited for the recreational runner/walker as well as the serious competitor. It is a member of the Road Runner’s Club of America.

Founded in August 2005, the FishHawk Road Runners Club is a running club that offers something for everyone.  They are a diverse group of runners with more than 160 members.  The FishHawk Road Runners participate in races varying from the mile to the marathon.  They also like to get off the roads and run the trails.  Their runners participate in several trails races each year.  A key club goal is to participate in as many local races as they can, with a focus on camaraderie, teamwork and fun. They meet three days a week, Saturday’s, Tuesday’s and Thursday’s for different distance and track workouts. They put on four races a year our premier event being the FishHawk Road Race in January.



Four Green Fields Running Club


“A Bunch of Drinkers with a Running Problem”. Come out every Tuesday and enjoy a 5K, followed by your favorite brew and company with friends. Four Green Fields running club is a social experience for people that enjoy running and of course a pint of your favorite brew at the finish. Complete 10 Runs and get awarded your very own Four Green Fields Running Club T-Shirt (All you have to pay for it is 50Km’s on Bayshore Blvd).

Popular Running Routes in Tampa Bay

We have utilized the USA Track & Field latest technology in mapping running routes in the Tampa Bay area. You can also use this service to locate places to run while you are traveling. We have included popular running routes in Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater.

TampaBayshore Blvd

Carrollwood village - running in peaceful residential neighborhoods and carrollwood village golf course; some routes are shaded; primarily on roads and sidewalks, occasionally have grassy areas next to sidewalks

3.5 miles ----- 5k ----- Tampa Bay Runners (TBR) 5 miles ----- TBR 6 miles

Bayshore Blvd - the ultimate running route in Tampa; run while you watch the sun rises and feel the light breeze on your face; approximately 8 miles of asphalt (could be extended to approximately 10 - 12 miles on either end), grassy area next to asphalt; water fountains along the main stretch of the boulevard which is not shaded; grocery store and coffee shops are nearby for a post-workout snacks; most often run into the Hyde Park or SoHo area off Bayshore for the shady areas and exclusive residential communities

Davis Islands - this South Tampa residential neighborhood is frequent by runners, cyclists, swimmers and triathletes; running through the streets and check out beautiful residences at the same time; there are water stops throughout the islands; most often stop at one of the restaurants on the island after their workouts; follow streets on the outer most of the islands yield a 9 - 10 miles loop, perfect for marathon training; neighborhoods are shaded; roads alongside the Peter O' Knight airport are not shaded; restrooms are located inside the airport terminal

6 miles ----- 9 miles ----- YMCA Blue Shark training route

Temple Terrace - running on the road alongside the temple terrace golf course, this running route is shady, perfect for the the summer mornings; there are also water stops along the way; the end of the run has a couple of rolling hills to test your endurance

Westchase - this NW Tampa neighborhood has peaceful streets, nicely manicured landscape and exclusive homes; running on roads that wind through the Westchase community and near the westchase golf course; coffee shops and restaurants throughout the community are perfect for a after workout meal or snack

University of South Florida, Tampa Campus - running surface is mostly sidewalks and roads; water stops and restrooms are inside buildings along the routes; a few places on campus have rolling hills that present great challenge; there is also a fully shaded trail that is approximately 1 mile long

St. PetersburgVinoy Park

North Shore/Snell Isle - a very active area near waterfront downtown St. Petersburg from morning to night; you will find runners and cyclists hitting the roads in all hours of the day and swimmers packing North Shore Pool; a short bridge over is the exclusive Snell Isle residential area with many shaded areas to run; water fountains are along the waterfront and at the pier; there are also public restrooms at the tennis courts

ClearwaterClearwater Beach

Sand Key/Clearwater Beach - running through 2 of the area's best beaches and watch the sunset at the same time; if you want a challenge, start in Sand Key and travel through the Sand Key bridge and then Clearwater Memorial Causeway and back track your steps; water fountains are inside Sand Key park and Clearwater beach, restrooms are also available
